Bolton MP blasts energy cap lift as a disaster for residents

A BOLTON MP says the energy cap lift will be an "absolute disaster" for her constituents.

Bolton South East's Yasmin Qureshi has blasted the anticipated price hikes.

She said: "A 54 per cent rise in annual energy bills, which translates to around ?700 a year, is an absolute disaster for my constituents in Bolton South East - make no mistake of that.

"What I find most concerning about this energy price rise is we have known for months that this has been coming.

"Yet only now are Ministers scrambling to introduce some form of policy to mitigate this looming disaster - the incompetence is absolutely astounding.

"Reports of a ?200 'council tax rebate', in the form of a state-backed loan, is not going to cut it for my residents in my patch. It really won't.

"The Labour Party has a clear plan - we will introduce a one-off, windfall tax on private oil and gas companies who have recorded large profits.

"This will fund support for working families and a cut in VAT on energy bills."
